FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Legionnaires' disease and how do people get infected?
Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. People usually become infected by inhaling contaminated water droplets from sources such as cooling towers, hot tubs, fountains, and building water systems. It generally does not spread person to person, and the exact source is not always identified.
If you were diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease and lived, worked, or spent time in an area later linked to a cooling tower or water system found to contain Legionella, you may have grounds for a claim against the building owner or operator responsible for maintaining that system. We review your exposure timeline, medical records, and the city’s investigation findings at no cost.
In New York, many negligence-based personal injury claims generally have a three-year statute of limitations, while wrongful death claims generally must be brought within two years of the date of death. Different deadlines and rules for when your official time period begins may apply depending on the facts of your case and who is responsible.
Depending on the severity of the illness, compensation can cover hospitalization and ICU costs, long-term respiratory care, lost income, pain and suffering, and in fatal cases, funeral expenses and wrongful death damages for surviving family members.
We work on a contingency fee basis. There’s no upfront cost, and you owe nothing unless we recover compensation for you. The initial case review is always free.
