Chicago Outbreak Overview

In early September 2025, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) identified two cases of Legionnaires’ disease connected to the Alden Valley Ridge Rehabilitation and Health Center in Bloomingdale. Both individuals have since recovered.

Subsequent environmental testing confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria within the building’s cooling tower and in a patient’s room. Legionnaires’ disease, a severe form of pneumonia, is caused by inhaling water droplets contaminated with this bacteria. The IDPH noted that Illinois typically sees 300 to 500 cases annually, with a higher incidence in the warmer summer months when the bacteria can grow more rapidly in damp environments.

Public Health Response

State and county health officials have ordered the Alden Valley Ridge facility to implement water restrictions and to formally notify all residents, their families, and staff members of the situation. The facility is working with the IDPH to remediate the contaminated sources and ensure the safety of its residents and the surrounding community.

Health leaders have advised that anyone who visited or was within a two-mile radius of the facility in the past month and is experiencing symptoms—such as cough, fever, shortness of breath, headache, or muscle aches—should seek immediate medical attention.
