In October 2023, a 71-year-old woman from Merrimac, Massachusetts, became ill and died from Legionnaires’ disease approximately one week after staying at the Mountain View Grand Resort. She had used the resort’s hot tub during her stay. In December 2023, a second individual from Rhode Island was hospitalized with Legionnaires’ disease after staying at the resort. Both guests stayed at different times and had no known connection to each other.
The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) initiated an investigation and confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria in the resort’s hot tub. As a precaution, the hot tub was closed, and the resort’s water system was tested. No additional sources of Legionella exposure were identified.
Public Health Response
The DHHS issued a health alert advising healthcare providers to consider Legionnaires’ disease in patients with pneumonia who had traveled to Whitefield within the preceding 14 days. The alert emphasized the importance of early detection and appropriate treatment, as Legionnaires’ disease can be severe and requires prompt antibiotic therapy.
The Mountain View Grand Resort cooperated with state health officials during the investigation and implemented enhanced water safety protocols to prevent future occurrences.
