Bonterra Outbreak Overview

Bonterra at Cross Creek Ranch was built with active senior living in mind, but in mid-2023, its serenity was shaken.

76-year-old Antoinette Marinchak—a regular at the clubhouse—began showing symptoms around June 12 and sadly passed away in the hospital on June 28. Her family, seeking answers, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit, alleging that exposure to Legionella at the clubhouse led to her illness.

The Fort Bend County Health and Human Services Department (FBCHHS) quickly got involved. As of now, there are 4 confirmed cases and 5 additional probable cases tied to the outbreak. In response, the Bonterra Clubhouse was closed indefinitely as authorities conducted on-site inspections and worked to control any further risk.

Public Health and Community Response

Health officials kicked off their investigation on June 22, launching a full-scale response that included:

  • Comprehensive water testing
  • System flushing and disinfection
  • Installation of safety protocols to prevent recontamination

Although the cause of death in Marinchak’s case is still pending an epidemiology report, the presence of Legionella in the water system has been confirmed.

Meanwhile, Johnson Development Corp., named in the lawsuit, has expressed condolences but clarified that it does not own or operate the clubhouse. They’ve pledged full cooperation with FBCHHS as the inquiry continues.

Residents are urged to watch for symptoms like cough, fever, muscle pain, and shortness of breath, and to contact a healthcare provider immediately if they feel unwell. Mentioning potential exposure at Bonterra will ensure appropriate testing and treatment.
