In August 2017, UW Medical Center identified three cases of Legionnaires’ disease among patients. Two of these patients died, while the third was diagnosed with Legionella pneumonia but was believed to have contracted the infection outside the hospital. All affected individuals had received care in the hospital’s Cascade Tower.
Environmental testing revealed the presence of Legionella bacteria in ice machines and sinks within the Cascade Tower. As a precaution, water sources on the fifth floor were shut off, and special filters were installed on all showers and sinks in the inpatient rooms. Additionally, a comprehensive water management plan was developed, including testing and monitoring of water temperature, chlorine levels, and presence of Legionella.
Despite these measures, the outbreak underscored the challenges healthcare facilities face in maintaining safe water systems and the importance of prompt response to prevent further cases.
Public Health Response
Following the outbreak, UW Medical Center collaborated with public health officials to investigate the source of the Legionella bacteria. The hospital took immediate steps to address the contamination, including shutting off water sources, installing filters, and implementing a robust water management plan. These actions were aimed at preventing further exposure and ensuring the safety of patients and staff.
