St. Croix Outbreak Overview

The Virgin Islands Department of Health identified Legionella bacteria in the showerheads, kitchen sinks, and bathroom sinks of specific hotel rooms. One guest required hospitalization and intubation in an intensive care unit; the other recovered without hospitalization. An additional three guests were suspected cases, and investigations are ongoing.

The potable water supply tested negative for Legionella contamination. The Department of Health issued a cease-and-desist order on January 10, 2025, requiring the hotel to suspend all operations until remediation was completed and subsequent testing confirmed the absence of Legionella bacteria.

Following extensive plumbing replacements and decontamination efforts, the cease-and-desist order was lifted on January 17, 2025, allowing the hotel to resume operations, except for one room still under remediation.

Public Health Response

The Virgin Islands Department of Health conducted a comprehensive investigation, identifying the source of Legionella contamination and implementing corrective actions.
