South Point Hotel Legionnaires’ Disease Overview
The Southern Nevada Health District launched an investigation after two cases of Legionnaires’ disease were reported among guests who stayed at the South Point Hotel. Environmental water samples taken from the hotel revealed the presence of Legionella bacteria in the water systems. As a precautionary measure, the hotel has started remediation efforts and increased testing to ensure the safety of its water supply. Guests have been notified, and additional precautions are being put in place to safeguard their well-being.
Legionnaires’ disease symptoms typically appear within 2 to 10 days after exposure but can occur up to two weeks later. Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches.
Health District Response and Precautions
In response to the outbreak, the Southern Nevada Health District has been working closely with the South Point Hotel to monitor and address potential Legionella contamination. The hotel is cooperating fully with the investigation and has implemented water system remediation measures, including ongoing testing and guest notifications.
The Health District recommends that guests who stayed at the South Point Hotel on or after April 16, 2025, and who are experiencing symptoms within 14 days of their stay, complete a confidential illness survey and seek medical attention. Those at a higher risk for Legionnaires’ disease include individuals over the age of 50, smokers, people with chronic lung conditions, weakened immune systems, and other underlying health issues.
Symptoms and Risk Factors for Legionnaires’ Disease
Legionnaires’ disease is caused by inhaling water droplets containing the Legionella bacteria. It’s important to note that the disease doesn’t spread from person to person, but rather from environments with contaminated water systems. Those who are older or have existing health conditions are more vulnerable to developing the disease. Symptoms to watch for include:
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Headaches
If you experience any of these symptoms after staying at the South Point Hotel, seek medical care immediately.
