Ottawa Hospital Outbreak Overview
The Ottawa Hospital’s General campus, one of the city’s largest healthcare facilities, confirmed two cases of legionellosis in October 2023, traced to its water system. In response, officials restricted tap water access in the 5 East and 5 West units and worked with public health and environmental experts to contain the outbreak. Alternative water sources were provided to minimize disruption.
Legionnaires’ disease, a severe pneumonia caused by inhaling Legionella-contaminated droplets, poses the greatest risk to seniors, immunocompromised patients, and those with chronic illnesses. While healthy individuals may be unaffected, experts warn the infection can be fatal in vulnerable populations.
Hospital operations remain largely unaffected, though this marks the second such outbreak at the General campus since 2021—raising concerns about Legionella’s persistence in large or aging water systems. A full system purge and disinfection is underway.
Public Health Response
Ottawa Public Health and TOH infection control teams are actively investigating the source and scope of the outbreak. Disinfection protocols, water testing, and infrastructure reviews are being carried out to prevent further exposure. Officials have also committed to providing regular updates to patients and families throughout the remediation process.
Although no fatalities have occurred, vigilance remains essential, especially considering the vulnerable population within the hospital.
