Outbreak Overview: Crunch Fitness, Garden City
On June 5, 7, and 9, three cases of Legionnaires’ disease were reported to Central District Health (CDH), the local health authority for the Boise area. After interviews with the infected individuals, CDH identified the hot tub at Crunch Fitness (2999 N. Lakeharbor Lane) as the common link.
Health officials visited the facility on June 7 and the hot tub was voluntarily closed the same day. Water samples collected after mitigation efforts came back negative for Legionella, likely due to cleaning that occurred before testing. Despite the negative results, officials believe the gym’s hot tub was the probable source of exposure.
While the investigation is now closed and no ongoing threat remains, this incident highlights the risks associated with unregulated water systems in Idaho gyms and hotels.
Public Health Response
Central District Health responded swiftly to the outbreak. Inspectors were sent to the gym within two days of the first reported case. Crunch Fitness cooperated with the investigation and closed the hot tub voluntarily. The facility remains open, and officials have stated there is no current risk to gym members.
Unlike some states, Idaho does not regulate most health club pools or hot tubs, meaning there is no requirement for regular inspections. This lack of oversight may increase the potential for bacteria like Legionella to grow and spread in these water systems.
